MHAPGC Mission Statement The mission of The Mental Association of Prince Georges County Inc. (MHAPGC) is to work in cooperation with the National Mental Health Association and the Mental Health Association of Maryland toward victory over mental illness through the development of a volunteer citizens' movement to advocate for improved care and treatment of persons with mental illness; for improved methods and services in research, prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness; for improved public attitudes toward mental illness; and for the promotion of mental health in the community. MHAPGC History The Mental Health Association of Prince George's County (MHAPGC), an affiliate of the National Mental Health Association and the Mental Health Association of Maryland, is a voluntary, nonprofit, citizens' organization concerned with all aspects of mental health and mental illness. For forty-six years the MHAPGC has brought together consumers, families, professionals, and other concerned citizens in an effort to provide outstanding and progressive programs of public education, prevention, advocacy, and community services. Over the years our efforts have facilitated the development of more humane treatment, increased research, and greater public understanding and awareness of issues related to mental health. Since 1957, the MHAPGC has been a leading advocate, catalyst, educator, and promoter, for all aspects of mental health services and has stimulated the development of a range of mental health services in the county. We have helped set up and lead advisory groups and coalitions that successfully placed mental health issues in the county such as support for children with disabilities and school based mental health services. We have influenced elected officials to improve mental health laws, public policies, and funding. Our progressive programs promote mental health and help individuals recover and live healthy, productive lives. Our Vision To have a just, humane, and healthy society in which all people are accorded respect, dignity, and the opportunity to achieve their full potential free from stigma and prejudice.
